In Village Square at recess on Wednesday May 27, we officially opened National Reconciliation Week with a special ceremony.
A Welcome To Country and a smoking ceremony were performed by Melinda Kennedy – Wadawurrung traditional custodian and owner, and a board member of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council – while Kurinji man Michael Cussens played the didgeridoo.
Melinda and Michael also met with some of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Other guests included Koorie education coordinator Melissa Lillyst, and Daniel Ward from Wyndham Youth Services.
Held annually from May 27 to June 3, National Reconciliation Week is an important opportunity for our students to learn about shared histories, cultures, respect, and ways we can continue to build positive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
