On Friday October 17, we had the privilege of setting out on an excursion to tour a Foodbank warehouse.

I went along with four other students and two teachers, and when we arrived at the Foodbank we were greeted by our very friendly tour guides. We had to put on hi-vis vests before starting the tour.

We first learned about the history of Foodbank. In Victoria it started as the State Relief Committee during the Great Depression in 1930, which means that the charity has been supporting Victorians with food relief for 96 years!

We also learned that 7000 pallets of food can be stored inside the warehouse – and that’s not counting the racks inside their cooling room!

The food given to Foodbank is mostly donations from farmers and manufactures, such as when the produce is about to go out of season, or it doesn’t fit cosmetic standards (like a potato too small for chips, or an onion large enough to count as three in a recipe).

We also learned that the operation is run by volunteers, who take time out of their precious day to do unpaid work at the warehouse.

The excursion was super-fun and educational!
