Our secondary students attended the recent Student Representative Council (SRC) forum run by our local federal Labor MP, Joanne Ryan.
Here are two student accounts of the event.
Marios Gkantinas, Year 10
We, the Student Representative Council, recently had the privilege of visiting Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College in Werribee, where the biannual SRC forum was held by Ms. Joanne Ryan MP.
It was a fantastic opportunity to synergise with leadership teams from other schools and gain valuable insights on what community involvement looks like outside of Manor Lakes College, while meeting some really interesting people.
As a group, we discussed our roles and devised strategies for creating positive change in our school environment, before exchanging presentations with fellow SRC teams.
We look forward to congregating again at the upcoming forum next semester to touch base on growth and round off the academic year with another wonderful meeting.
Honey Waheed, Year 7
On Thursday April 30, SRC leaders all across Werribee, including ours, were invited by Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College to have a discussion on issues within our school.
We collaborated and identified what we thought was crucial and needed to be fixed in our school. We made a poster about our schools’ values, what culture or regulations we follow, and how it’s properly implemented, which we then represented.
The main goal was to show how our motto, ‘dream, believe, achieve’, was communicated and addressed throughout the college.
Afterwards, we had to think of a number of issues at our school, and had a vote on the most crucial problem. We had a tie between ‘staff shortages’ and ‘student wellbeing’, so we had a revote, where finally we concluded that staff shortages was more crucial.
We began to try to find solutions for this, including having student tutors, getting CRTs to know the material, and providing online or real-life after-school classes.
