Some of our Year 10-12 students had the wonderful opportunity to meet Formula 1 racing car driver Kimi Antonelli during their recent excursion to the Melbourne Grand Prix.
On the Thursday before the big race, the 19-year-old Italian was happy to pose for a photo with our students. Antonelli finished second in the race and then, in China on March 15, became the second-youngest winner of a Grand Prix.
On their outing, our students participated in the Driver Learner Program, which provides students with the opportunity to explore the technology behind one of the world’s most advanced sports through interactive exhibits, career seminars and STEM-based challenges.
The action-packed day was designed to inspire students and showcase diverse career pathways in STEM and motorsport.
They were certainly inspired, as shown in their reflections on the day.
Mankaran Chandel, Year 11
“The trip was a great success. The experience of watching the F2 and GT cars on the road gave me much information about the technical aspect of motorsport. The best part of the day was meeting Kimi Antonelli behind the Mercedes Centre. It is something that my group will always remember. These interactions in industries are priceless to the students and I believe that this needs to continue in the school program in coming years.”
Uzair Rehman, Year 11
“It was really enjoyable and we had tons of learning opportunities, all while trying different activities and real-life experiences. It was a great mix of learning.”
Kavya Narang, Year 11
“F1 day was an amazing experience. I got to enjoy different types of cars that were racing, including the V8s, Porsches and the F2, which was probably the best part. Hopefully next time, we get to see the F1 cars but even this was amazing. Would definitely go again next year if given the opportunity.”
